Update Log
moved /shrines/garfield to /garfield and /shrines/snailfish to /snailfish!
the old links should also still work. if anyone notices unusual behavior let me know
new rule #1
only one account per person, please! if you already have more than one account, please contact me via chat or email admin@codecreature.net to let me know so i can merge them.
why?
a couple reasons! i have storage limitations and every user takes up a certain chunk of space. it also makes things unfair to other users for games, like the worm races. i know some people may want to change usernames, i am working on adding that as an option soon so please just be patient! you can also contact me to have it changed manually for now.
new rule #2
must be over 13 years old to have an account.
why?
i am not equipped to moderate a safe space for very young users. this site is currently intended to be around PG-13, including potential swearing and mature themes.
tested userpages and user settings on chrome for the first time, found a few issues that should hopefully be fixed! if you're a chrome user and something still isn't working right, let me know
few new flags added to the profile options, also made the system much less annoying for myself behind the scenes. i did have to manually correct everybody's profiles, so if you notice a flag missing just go into your settings and re-add it. shouldn't happen again :)
in other news, new emojis:
Since I pay for my own hosting and am getting increasing amounts of traffic, I want to make extra sure that hotlinked images don't end up eating into my usage capacity. Hasn't been an issue so far, but safer to prevent it in advance (plus it prevents any surprise breakage in other peoples' sites going forward.)
Codecreature says... "Always download and rehost images from small websites!"
Realized that the color palettes across some pages (particularly worm race) has drifted over time, and couldn't unsee the inconsistencies. Made very slight changes to correct this, most notably the pinks, purples, and blues. Wouldn't make an update about it but I know y'all are autistic and don't want to scare anyone with unannounced changes lol
made my page settings button a little easier to work with under the hood. no visual or functional changes, but you might need to do a hard refresh if things are displaying weird. i think i got all the relevant pages updated, but let me know if you spot one that's off!
im switching a bunch of things over 2 avif or webp files (like all the screenshots here in the updates) 4 improved file size and quality!! wont be so jpeg artifacty anymore B33
option added to the user settings page to make gameplay activity private! this means your gameplay stats won't show up in leaderboards, recent activity, etc. just in case anyone wants the benefits of logged in play without being subjected to the mortifying ordeal of being known
we've moved to a slightly different hosting plan (heliohost's morty server) that should have near-zero downtime. no more 502 bad gateway errors (hopefully!!)
I really want to be able to have actual users for games, chat, etc, so I'm testing that system out! It's pretty basic for now and only used in worm race so far, but I'm planning on rolling out more features over time as I get the hang of things.
Passwords are encrypted and I've generally tried to use good security practices, though I'm sure there's more to be added as I go. There's also a limit on how many times you can fail entering a password before being locked out. Since the current userbase is very small there's no automated account recovery system yet, but if you contact admin@codecreature.net from the email associated with your account I can reset things for you.
I've set some basic password requirements, including bans on all variations of the most common passwords (sorry to anyone relying on P@ssword123, but it's for your own good.) As with any online account, I strongly recommend using a password manager so that one security breach on any site doesn't create security risks on every site you've ever used. I'm doing my best here but you should never trust any site with the keys to your entire life online!
